REVIEW: 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson

If you like Meg Cabot books, you might want to try author Maureen Johnson, who writes fun, carefree novels that won't disappoint.

When Ginny receives thirteen little blue envelopes and instructions to buy a plane ticket to London, she knows something exciting is going to happen. What Ginny doesn't know is that she will have the adventure of her life and it will change her in more ways than one. Life and love are waiting for her across the Atlantic, and the thirteen little blue envelopes are the key to finding them in this funny, romantic, heartbreaking novel.

The premise of this novel is a great idea, and it was executed well, with humor, wit and drama along the way, which is part of the reason I enjoyed it so much.

At times, I was annoyed by the main character, Ginny, for doing silly things -  but maybe it was just me?

The other characters in the book were highly entertaining and they were what kept you hooked. What they did, who they were with, and the situations that they created were the cornerstone of this book for me. Without them, it would be just one of the same.
They were laugh-out-loud, real and were great friends that you would want in real life, I would read 13 LBL just for that alone.

P.S. How cool is Richard's job - seriously! I want to have that job. Watch out richard.

I was annoyed with the end because it left it on a slight cliff-hanger, but you'll be happy to know that there is a sequel, The last little blue envelope.

Please ignore the cover because it really annoyed me. The girl on it was not what Ginny was described as. I mean seriously, hoop earrings and hair down? That is so not ginny. And the clothes too.  What were they thinking?

If you're a girl of 12-16, you'll really enjoy 13 Little Blue Envelopes. If you've read this book, you might also like Where I belong  by Gwendolyn Heasley or a Sarah Dessen novel such as What Happened to Goodbye.

Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson

Fresh and exciting, Suite Scarlett is a great summer read.

Scarlett Martin, lives in an old, run-down Art Deco Hotel called the Hopwell, situated in New York City. On her fifteenth birthday, Scarlett expects the usual present. A key to a suite that she has to take care of. But what she doesn't expect is that, on that same day, she gets a permanent guest. Mysterious, abrupt and brewing secret plans, Scarlett's new guest takes her down a path that she would never have expected...

I really enjoyed Suite Scarlett, the characters were interesting, lighthearted, and didn't have a terminal disease or a star crossed lover.

Suite Scarlett is exactly that, sweet. Cute, charming, but at times predictable, you'll find yourself following along with Scarlett, but sometimes frustrated at her and other characters.

Set in New York, Suite Scarlett is a fluffy, fun read that is great for you if you like authors Kody Keplinger, Meg Cabot or books Where I Belong by Gwendolen Heasley and Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn.

An agreeable example of contemporary fiction for Young Adults, I would recommend this book to teenage girls aged 13-16.

Devilish by Maureen Johnson

I recommend the book Devilish by Maureen Johnson for teenage girls of the ages 13 - 15.
If you like a great book that leaves you wanting more, then this a great choice.
According to Amber Benson, a.k.a. Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Tara, " I adored Maureen Johnson's book Devillish. I read it in one sitting and immediately wanted more.
It's the cleverest take on selling your soul that I've read in a long time."
Fans of Maureen Johnson and Real-Life stories that are mixed in with a fantasy plot will adore this tale of friendship and betrayal.
With the believable story line and characters that will make you laugh out loud, I'd pick up a copy of Devilish as soon as possible.
